David Miliband Gives a Speech About Refugees and Helping Them
Mishal Omar — June 23, 2017 — Keynote Trends
In his speech about refugees, David Miliband talks about how it is our obligation to help those who have been displaced in the world's current refugee crisis.
In the speech, Miliband discusses how our response to the refugee crisis is a test to our character. There are tens of millions of refugees from around the world, and 25 million of those have been forced to leave their home countries. The average length of displacement for these individuals is 10 years, however Miliban says that there are solutions to this problem, of which he names four. These solutions include allowing refugees to work in the countries they are settled in, giving child refugees education and support, giving them money for basic necessities so they can support their local economies (as most live in urban environments), and giving them the option to start a new life in the West.
As the son of Jewish refugees, Miliband comes with a unique perspective when examining these issues, and encourages people to put empathy and altruism into action to help those in need.
