In her happiness control keynote, Sonja Lyubomirsky explains what factors influence one's happiness.
In front of an easy to understand pie chart, she points out that about 50% of what determines our level of happiness is in our genes. Some people are more predisposed for happiness than others. About 10% is a result of our life circumstances, according to Lyubomirsky. Such a small percentage may explain why some people who live in war torn countries or impoverished conditions are still happy. This relatively low number also goes against the "I'll be happy when," strategy for happiness because it drastically undercuts the importance of our life circumstances in our overall happiness. Will you really be happier when you get that new car?
The key factor is intentional activity, as coined by Lyubomirsky. This accounts for 40% of our happiness and is under our control.
