She began as an preschool educator who graduated from the Icelandic College of education. She then worked her way to the top as the director of the Steinahlíð school. Her role as the head of this educational institution served to help her develop a teaching method that would become her life's work. Ólafsdóttir is accredited with having created the pedagogy referred to as Hjalli. This lead to the method being taught in an entirely new preschool in Hafnarfjörður called Hjalli.
