In talk delivered for TED, Billy Samuel Mwape, a project management expert, business strategist, and computer scientist, shares how he was able to translate his professional skillset into his personal life to help children who have special needs.
As he states at the beginning his talk, Mwape's son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy—a challenge that overwhelmed him at first, but inspired him to consider how he could make the best out of his situation and overcome it with his family. After conducting much research, Mwape realized that he could implement his knowledge of project management to effectively tackle small challenges in regards to this change, which would quickly add up to a big impact for his son. One example he highlights is he and his wife's motivation to see their son stand, which prompted them to create a system to help him work on his body mobility—combining their work with a physical therapist to help him progress. Every week, Mwape would meet with his family as a team—allowing them to celebrate their progress and consider their next steps. Over time, his son was able to greatly improve his range of motion, communication skills, and much more.
By managing life's tasks in this way, Mwape shows how parents and others can create a positive and goal-oriented system that supports children with special needs.
