This sustainable water source keynote by Fahad Al-Attiya provides an outline of Qatar’s strategy for providing water for its growing population.
Fahad Al-Attiya holds the position of Infrastructure Engineer in Qatar and is tasked with figuring out how to produce enough water for its growing 1.7 million people. Located in the Middle East, Qatar is a wealthy country that is built on oil money, however it receives only 74 mm of precipitation a year. On the flip side, Qatar consumes 430 litres per capita/year. So the question becomes, how does Qatar continue to grow and survive as a city without any water?
Fahad Al-Attiya explains they have one big energy source on their side: the sun. With 300 days of sunshine a year, Qatar uses solar energy to power water desalination. Water Desalination is the process of removing salts and other minerals from water to make it drinkable for humans.
