Gardner, who grew up in Canada, attended Ryerson University where she earned a degree in journalism. She then kick-started her career at CBC in 1990. She worked at CBC for over ten years as a producer, documentary-maker and reporter. 2007 marked the year she joined the Wikimedia Foundation. She has been ranked as the 70th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine.
